Once home to the Potawatomi, Wilmette’s land was awarded to Antoine Ouilmette in connection with his efforts in obtaining Native American participation in an area treaty during the early 1800s. The area’s settlement increased in the 1840s as farmers of German-Catholic origin came. Railroad construction increased the area’s growth in the 1850s, and the village was eventually incorporated in 1872. The village has been featured in Kurt Andersen’s fictional work, True Believers, which captures area characteristics in striking detail.

More than 80 percent of these adults also hold four-year college degrees or higher.
