History of Wilmette, Illinois
Once home to the Potawatomi, Wilmette’s land was awarded to Antoine Ouilmette in connection with his efforts in obtaining Native American participation in an area treaty during the early 1800s. The area’s settlement increased in the 1840s as farmers of German-Catholic origin came. Railroad construction increased the area’s growth in the 1850s, and the village was eventually incorporated in 1872. The village has been featured in Kurt Andersen’s fictional work, True Believers, which captures area characteristics in striking detail.

The village’s population at the time of the 2010 U.S. Census was 27,363, with nearly 30 percent of residents under the age of 18. The senior population is approximately 17 percent. Residency remains quite stable with almost 91 percent of residents living one or more years in the same home. Education is of extreme importance, reflected by a graduation rate of more than 98 percent among those who are at least 25 years old. More than 80 percent of these adults also hold four-year college degrees or higher.
