Morton Grove’s origins began as English immigrants first arrived to this area during the 1830s. Another influx of immigrants of German and Prussian descent began to arrive the following decade. The arrival of the Milwaukee Railroad in 1872 opened up business and employment opportunities for its residents who relied on farming and local companies to make a living.

Morton Grove became known for its greenhouse and floral industries during the early 1900s. The Poehlmann Brothers Company opened three plants in the area and employed 300-500 workers. Their claim to fame was winning first prize for their Poehlmann Rose during the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.

In contrast to the quiet atmosphere residents of Morton Grove are accustomed to, the area was once home to many roadhouses that were frequented by gamblers from the Chicago area. The area suffered greatly when the Great Depression hit and the Poehlmann’s company went bankrupt.

Morton Grove reinvented itself during the 1940s and 1950s to become a quiet suburb by banning things that might disturb its peaceful atmosphere. Most notably, the village because the first community in the United States to ban private ownership of handguns within its borders. This ban was dropped on July 2008.
