History of Morton Grove, Illinois
Nicknamed “The Grove,” the village of Morton Grove was established in 1895 in what is now known as Cook County. This suburb is north of Chicago and located 13 miles north of “The Loop,” six miles west of Lake Michigan, and eight miles northeast of O’Hare. According to 2013 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 23,519 people make this 5-square-mile village their home.
The public school system in Morton Grove includes four elementary school districts that comprise eight elementary and middle schools and two high school districts that comprise three high schools. Morton Grove’s origins began as English immigrants first arrived to this area during the 1830s. Another influx of immigrants of German and Prussian descent began to arrive the following decade. The arrival of the Milwaukee Railroad in 1872 opened up business and employment opportunities for its residents who relied on farming and local companies to make a living.
Morton Grove became known for its greenhouse and floral industries during the early 1900s. The Poehlmann Brothers Company opened three plants in the area and employed 300-500 workers. Their claim to fame was winning first prize for their Poehlmann Rose during the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.
In contrast to the quiet atmosphere residents of Morton Grove are accustomed to, the area was once home to many roadhouses that were frequented by gamblers from the Chicago area. The area suffered greatly when the Great Depression hit and the Poehlmann’s company went bankrupt.
Morton Grove reinvented itself during the 1940s and 1950s to become a quiet suburb by banning things that might disturb its peaceful atmosphere. Most notably, the village because the first community in the United States to ban private ownership of handguns within its borders. This ban was dropped on July 2008.
