Why Window AC Units Are Outdated

Portable window air conditioners have been the go-to choice in Cook County, IL for cooling smaller rooms, older buildings, and converted spaces for many years. These units are inexpensive and easily installed, making them a tempting choice. Unfortunately, the benefits of window units end there. Before you replace an outdated window AC unit, be sure you understand what you’re getting. Ductless air conditioning may offer more of the features and benefits that you’re looking for.

Noise

If you have an older window AC unit, you already know they are notoriously noisy. Newer units are a little better, but many are still at least as loud as the noise in a restaurant. Thankfully, you do have other options. To achieve whisper-quiet operation, you might consider an upgrade to a professionally installed, ductless AC system.

Appearance

Outdated units must be set into a window. There, these units block the view to the outside. They also allow hot air to enter around the unit and create an eyesore from the outside. More importantly, these systems can be a security risk. This is because intruders may be able to take advantage of the open window. Ductless AC units are installed with a small hole through the wall, so the window is clear and the security problem is avoided.

Energy Efficiency

Most window units are rated around 11 CEER, depending on the size of the unit. Older window AC units may only score an 8 or 9. Although these numbers are similar to basic central air systems, today’s ductless air conditioners can achieve much better energy efficiency. A small, room-size unit can reach an energy efficiency ratio as high as 42, and even basic models easily achieve 15 to 20 SEER.
