The Advantages of Upgrading Your Fan Coil

If you want to boost indoor comfort without a major overhaul of your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, fan coil units may do the trick. They can be used to improve ventilation, circulate air, or heat and cool a room or zone in both residential and commercial applications. They can serve as a primary heating and cooling unit or be combined with existing HVAC equipment. If you have an older model, you may want to upgrade to one with better energy-saving features. The HVAC experts at Assurance Heating & Air Conditioning can recommend models that save energy and boost comfort for your Wheeling, IL home.

How Fan Coil Units Work

These devices contain a coil, filter, and fan. The coil is a heat exchanger, the filter captures airborne particulates and the fan blows air across the coils and into the living space. Carrier units include a drain pan that routes moisture out of the unit. In addition, Carrier offers several options that enhance performance and comfort, including variable speed motors, noise reduction features, and thermostatic expansion valves that control refrigerant flow.

Units are available in two- or four-pipe configurations. Two-pipe systems route either hot or chilled water through the system. Four-pipe configurations route hot water through one set of pipes and chilled water through the other. Four-pipe systems offer more flexibility although up-front costs are higher.

Installation

Installation is easy and inexpensive because no ductwork is required. There are several installation options, including on the ceiling, above the ceiling, on the floor, on a wall, or inside ducts. Stacked units are used in buildings with multiple floors, installed one over the other, floor by floor, creating a vertical column. This reduces installation costs by continuing pipe runs between units.

Energy Efficiency

These devices increase energy efficiency up to 2 SEER depending on the model. Variable speed motors enhance efficiency by running at lower speeds when less cooling is needed. The result is improved comfort at lower costs.
