What should I Look for in a New Furnace or Heat Pump?

As winter arrives, homeowners in Glenview, Il, and the surrounding area rely on a dependable heat pump or furnace to keep the indoor environment warm and comfortable. If you have experienced high utility costs, repeated breakdowns and substandard comfort last winter, it may be time to consider purchasing a new heat pump or furnace.

What Should I look for in a New Heat Pump?

Heat pumps work by transferring heat from one area to another. The efficiency of the heat transfer process diminishes as the temperature falls, so it’s important to look for a heat pump with a high Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF). Since our area can experience severe winter weather, Carrier has introduced a hybrid heating system that includes an Infinity 96 gas furnace and an Infinity 19 series heat pump for the ultimate in comfort and efficiency. When equipped with Greenspeed Intelligence, the output of the compressor precisely tracks the prevailing load requirements to help lower utility costs and reduce system noise.

What Should I Look for in a Furnace?

Unlike heat pumps, furnaces burn fossil fuels to create the heat that is circulated throughout your home. Natural gas is the most common fuel, but models are available that burn propane and fuel oil. Over time, furnace efficiency has risen dramatically. The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) standard measures the percentage of fuel converted directly into heat energy. For example, the Carrier Infinity 98 Series furnace exhausts only two percent of the fuel it consumes in the form of waste gas. Fan noise in a large capacity system can also be an issue, so look for units that have a low decibel (db) output when running at full capacity.
